New Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem Appointed
Post Date:12/13/2023 9:00 AMAt last night’s meeting, the Novato City Council appointed Mayor Pro Tem Mark Milberg to serve as the new Mayor and Councilmember Tim O’Connor as Mayor Pro Tem. Each will serve in that capacity for one year.
Outgoing Mayor Susan Wernick passed the Mayoral Gavel to Mayor Pro Tem Mark Milberg during the Council’s reorganization meeting.
“My goal is to help lead the City of Novato to become a more responsible, effective and respected governmental organization,” said Mayor Milberg. “We have all the tools. We have an incredible Council. We will work together, and work hard, to accomplish our goals.”
This will be Milberg’s first time serving as Mayor of Novato.
Novato is a “general law” city, which means its governance structure is specified by state law, and its Council selects the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem for one-year terms. The Mayor signs official documents, presides at Council meetings and acts as the official head of the City at public and ceremonial occasions, but has no additional power on the Council.
“I’ve enjoyed my time on Council, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know my community. I appreciate the opportunity you’ve given me by asking me to serve in this role,” said Mayor Pro Tem O’Connor. “I’ve worked on a lot of teams over the years, and I think we have a really strong team. I’m looking forward to the year ahead."
Completing her first term as Mayor, outgoing Mayor Susan Wernick stated, “With our mighty and dedicated staff, and our committed City Council, we plowed through some very lengthy meetings and made some very difficult decisions over the past year. I’m very excited for the year ahead, and I know with Mark in the mayor’s seat we are going to be in very steady hands.”
The City Council generally meets at 6pm on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at Novato City Hall, 901 Sherman Avenue. The City Council meeting schedule is subject to change, please check the City calendar for upcoming meeting dates at novato.org/calendar. The next meeting of the Novato City Council will be January 9, 2024.
