Novato Celebrates New Youth-Led Mural at Pocket Park
Post Date:09/02/2026 3:00 PMThe City of Novato celebrated the completion of a new youth-led mural at Pocket Park, 950 7th Street, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony recognizing the young leaders, artists, volunteers, commissioners and City staff who helped bring this project to life.
The mural project was brought forward by the Marin County Youth Commission’s Racial Equity Subcommittee and developed in collaboration with the City’s Recreation, Cultural & Community Services Commission. With a focus on celebrating unity and diversity, the effort gave young people the opportunity to help shape a permanent work of public art that reflects their perspective and creativity.
“What I love about public art is that it brings people together,” said Mayor Rachel Farac. “This mural celebrates who we are, the things that make each of us unique, and reminds us that we are better together. There is always more that connects us than separates us.”
Local artist Heather Phelps worked with student artists to transform their ideas into the finished mural. Featuring vibrant colors and landscapes, the artwork includes the themes of unity, diversity, inclusion and representation, adding a welcome artistic element to a well-used community gathering space that serves people of all ages and backgrounds.
The City of Novato extends its appreciation to everyone who contributed to this project, especially the local youth whose voices and creativity helped shape this new piece of public art.
