Winter Storm Preparedness

Post Date:12/16/2010

The return of the rainy season is a gentle reminder for all of us to be proactive and make our properties and neighborhoods as disaster-proof as possible. The City of Novato’s Emergency Management Team, which includes representatives from all city departments, Novato Fire Protection District, local agencies and others involved in the disaster planning and response in the City of Novato meet regularly to train, practice and discuss disaster preparedness strategies. With the storm season beginning and numerous locations throughout the City having a history of flood problems, you can never be too prepared. After all, prevention is much easier and less costly than having to make repairs after the fact.

There are many ways to help prevent flooding in the streets, and on your property. One of the easiest, yet most overlooked ways to prevent street flooding is keeping drain inlets clean and clear of debris and obstructions. This means raking leaves away from any drains in front of your home and, removing obstructions in the gutter, such as basketball stands and refuse collection containers. Although the City does clean debris from the roadways, it is still the responsibility of each and every home owner (or renter) to keep the sidewalk, gutter and drain in front of their home free of debris and obstructions.

The City of Novato has sand and bags available for all residents at rear of 917 Sherman Avenue, Novato. Please note that citizens are responsible for supplying their own labor, shovels and support. Also note these important numbers and the City website address.
