The City of Novato is developing Novato’s first-ever Economic Strategic Plan.

This plan will guide how we support existing businesses, attract new ones, and create more opportunities to work, shop, and spend time locally. Community input will directly influence future priorities and investments so Novato grows in a way that reflects what matters most to you.

Economic Snapshot

Development of Novato's Economic Strategic Plan began with an in-depth economic analysis to better understand trends, strengths and areas of opportunity.

Key findings show:

  • Employment growth in Novato is outpacing Marin County overall
  • Median household income nearly doubled from 2013–2023
  • Growth in manufacturing, healthcare, construction, life sciences, and professional services
  • Food and beverage businesses are driving local sales growth
  • Nearly 2,800 housing units are planned or underway, supporting future workforce needs

At the same time, challenges remain, including commercial vacancies and continued recovery in the hospitality sector from the impacts of the pandemic.

What We Heard

The City invited the community to share feedback on Novato’s economic future through an online survey, community workshop, and stakeholder interviews. Community feedback showed strong support for a vibrant, locally focused economy that preserve's Novato's character and quality of life.
